The general feeling from those people involved within offering "stammering treatment", such as myself, is that there are basically two forms of therapy; there is the more traditional types of speech and language therapy and secondly there are the expert stammering treatments.

stutter-therapyThe traditional speech and language therapists do have their place and there uses however they will fully admit that they do not even attempt to cure the person who has a stammer as in their opinion this is not possible. Before you become too down hearted, that is of course if you are a person that has a stammer, I can confirm that they are in fact in-correct. I am living proof that stammering can be overcome as I have managed to achieve fluency (I had a stammer for fully eighteen years of my life).

The experts in the field of stammering therapy have a sole aim to help people to achieve total fluency which is a much more positive approach and one which is widely welcomed. I would always prefer a positive approach to a negative approach.

You may feel that I am rather bitter after all I am somebody that attended speech and language therapy for fourteen years! Yes fourteen years of therapy and I was still stammering at the end of it; I guess I had a right to be slightly bitter! I have to say that back then speech therapy seemed to be the only option; this was prior to the birth of the internet.

I am fully aware that speech and language therapy is ofen free from charge; it is just that I had such a bad experience of using these so called specialists.

I imagine that over the last fourteen years that the quality of speech therapy has improved some what, at least I would hope that it has!

A real specialist in the field of stammering would be, in my opinion, a person that fully comprehends what it is like to have this form of speech impediment and only a person that has had a stammer can really have this understanding. How many speech therapists do you know that have or used to have a stammer? I think that says it all!
